Roger Clemens denied allegations by his former trainer that he took performance-enhancing drugs, calling them "a dangerous and destructive shortcut that no athlete should ever take.
The accusations against the seven-time Cy Young Award winner from former trainer Brian McNamee were the most striking in last week's Mitchell Report. Former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell said McNamee said he injected Clemens with steroids in 1998 while with the Toronto Blue Jays, and steroids and human growth hormone in 2000 and 2001, while with the New York Yankees.
"I want to state clearly and without qualification: I did not take steroids, human growth hormone or any other banned substances at any time in my baseball career or, in fact, my entire life," Clemens said Tuesday in a statement issued through his agent, Randy Hendricks. "Those substances represent a dangerous and destructive shortcut that no athlete should ever take.
"I am disappointed that my 25 years in public life have apparently not earned me the benefit of the doubt, but I understand that Senator Mitchell's report has raised many serious questions. I plan to publicly answer all of those questions at the appropriate time in the appropriate way. I only ask that in the meantime people not rush to judgment."

Yeah, well, what a country...when you have to defend yourself from getting slammed in the paper without even speaking to the commish first...sad really.

Two things here. #1.) NEVER respond to the media. You'll never win. #2.) NEVER say you'll respond at the appropriate time. That always seem like it is the beginning of a long lie.

I don't know what's worse, Goth. The fact that Clemens has to defend himself against heresay allegations, or the fact that even I'm starting to get skeptical about all these players. I mean, you've got to give them the benefit of the doubt - innocent until proven guilty and all that. But it's becoming instinct to look at them and assume that they're steroid users and liars.

Lefty - this is not a court of law so we don't need "proof" in the sense that you're talking about. There's plenty of "proof," already. I love Clemens but it's pretty obvious to me that he took steroids.

Here's how he can prove that he DIDN'T take steroids: File a libel lawsuit against MLB, George Mitchell, and the trainer who fingered him. And that goes for every other player, too.

But I guarantee the Rocket, or anybody else won't do that.

Interesting that you feel that way Lefty. I believe that most of these people have brought it upon themselves to a degree. I think when they are caught they at first deny any allegations. At that point there are a lot of people that want to and do believe what they said only to find out sometime later they lied. They themselves destroyed our belief in what they say. Naturally the media can't sell the news unless it is bad so they jump in and sensationalize the story as much as possible. When Marl McGwire got up before congress and wouldn't give an answer ... what did he say in the minds of the media and many sports fans ???
