Yanks Don't Want Santana As it turns out, the New York Yankees have pulled away from talks with the Minnesota Twins. Bill Madden reports they could have had the ace for a package of four prospects with Phil Hughes as the top guy. Even without Ian Kennedy, they could have had Santana. But GM Brian Cashman convinced the new Steinbrenners that the team should keep Hughes and move forward. Plus, the fact Andy Pettite returned (along with his payroll) was an incentive to stay away from Santana since the payroll is already near the $200 million mark for 2008.

Re: Yanks Don't Want Santana I really like Phil Hughes and i'm all for keeping young prospects but Santanna is a top notch pitcher the Yankees need to get to that next level. Then again as I said those young players may reach that level soon. I really do like Phil Hughes but I don't trust Cashman to tell the truth!

| Re: Yanks Don't Want Santana Folks, it's not so much about the Yankees getting Santana, it's also about keeping away from Boston. If he goes there, it's curtains for the Yankees for the next few years. I would have done whatever it took to get him in the Bronx.

Re: Yanks Don't Want Santana True. The Yankees finally have some good talent coming up from a rich farm system. It's always best to go with home grown talent than acquiring a big free agent. Look at what would have happened if the Yankees signed the disappointing Barry Zito. Granted he was a free agent and they wouldn't have had to let go talent like Hughes but it just shows you that sometimes the big fish don't always swim well in your pond. As for the Red Sox getting Santanna, if it happens that's just tough luck. The Red Sox are the World Champions and have a dynasty brewing, Yankee fans just have to deal with it. Now we know what it was like to be a Red Sox fan in the late '70s so just take it like a man.

Re: Yanks Don't Want Santana Wasn't the same thing supposed to happen when the Sox got Gagne ???

Great point. And not only that, but look at how Santana has pitched in the playoffs. Just like Greg Maddux, he takes himself out of games after 7 innings. I'm fine with sticking with kids and letting the chips fall where they may.
