Cool Santana talks warming up

Quote:
The Yankees continue to talk to the Twins about trading for two-time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana. Talks are expected to accelerate between now and next week's winter meetings in Nashville, with a key question just how badly the Yankees want the lefthander.

If the Yankees believe Santana could mean the difference between making the playoffs and making or winning the World Series, they may have to give up a little more than they'd like. That could mean surrendering righthander Phil Hughes along with centerfielder Melky Cabrera and another prospect (possibly pitcher Alan Horne or outfielders Jose Tabata or Austin Jackson).

Yankees officials have not said exactly what the Twins want for Santana. However, it's been made clear that the Twins place more value upon Joba Chamberlain and Hughes than on Ian Kennedy, and that a centerfielder most likely must be part of any deal because they lost Torii Hunter to free agency. The Yankees won't easily give up Chamberlain and Robinson Cano. That doesn't necessarily mean, "No way," but as yet there is no agreement that either player should be relinquished in a deal for Santana.

If the deal were Hughes, Melky and a minor leaguer, I wold make it. I wouldn't trade Cano or Chamberlain, though. What about everybody else?

Re: Santana talks warming up

Hughes, Melky and one of the other prospects (not Joba)...the Yankees have to do that, if they can negotiate a long-term deal with Santana.

If that's all it takes, no reason they shouldn't. They can just go out and sign a new CF and focus on the pen. Imagine the battle between Santana and Beckett.

Again, this may be moot if Boston has a change of heart and offers Ellsbury.

That ain't enough...don't the Twins think they can milk more out of the Yankees?

Re: Santana talks warming up

Will the Twins still deal Santana after trading Garza? I mean, how many pitchers can they afford to trade?

If they want a young pitcher back in return, who are they going to get better than Hughes? Boston has already said that they are not trading Buchholz.

Remember, too, that the Twins can end up with nothing also.

That is what is forcing their hands on a bad trade...

Re: Santana talks warming up

The NYTimes today says the Yankees are hesitant to offer Phil Hughes in a possible deal. Instead, Cashman has offered Ian Kennedy, Melky Cabrera and at least one minor league prospect.

The Twins want to hold out for Hughes and Ellsbury (from Boston). It could be a game of chicken to see who blinks first.

Twins/Yankees deal close?

ESPN reported this morning that a deal between the Twins and Yankees is close. Santana for Hughes. There has to be more offered by the Yankees. Anybody know the specifics?

It seems like the Yankees have blinked.

In today's Newsday:

It's not one-for-one.

It's been reported that the Yankees have decided to pony up their big pitcher in Phil Hughes (along with Melky Cabrera and Ian Kennedy).

The issue was between Boston and the Yanks, who would offer their big player first (Ellsbury or Hughes). So the Yankees are the favorites right now.

Re: Twins/Yankees deal close?

I knew the Yankees would cave in as soon as Boston was reported as being interested. They do not want them getting Santana too.

Re: Twins/Yankees deal close?

Yeah, Hughes, Kennedy and Cabrera was the deal I heard too. Good deal on both sides - Yankees get arguably the best starting pitcher in the game right now, and the Twins get some good young talent in return for a guy they were going to lose next year anyway.

Re: Twins/Yankees deal close?

I would have done it for Hughes and Kennedy. They are both going to be good. Cabrera was a bonus throw in for them.

Re: Twins/Yankees deal close?

The Twins wanted a CF apart of any deal they were going to make. For the Yankees, it's not much of a loss as far as Cabrera. They can go out and sign a CF. Losing Hughes and Kennedy, as long as Santana is healthy, it should be an even deal.

Now all that's left if the Twins accept this, (I'm sure) is the Yanks getting a window to negotiate a long-term deal with Santana.
