Rivera agrees to new Yanks contract

As the Yankees were making official the hiring of Joe Girardi as the 32nd manager in team history, star reliever Mariano Rivera was at the team's Tampa, Fla., headquarters with his agents -- a likely precursor to a contract extension. As previously reported, the Yankees hoped to sign Rivera for three years and about $40 million. A baseball official familiar with the Yankees' plans, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because negotiations are ongoing, said the sides had a positive meeting and can now progress to contractual details. -- Star-Ledger

That was fast. Guess he wasn't all that interested in testing the market after all. Three years... can he be an effective closer for three more years, you think?

Re: Rivera agrees to new Yanks contract

Did he agree yet or are they still negotiating?

They did plan to offer him a boatload of money.

Re: Rivera agrees to new Yanks contract

Your post doesn't say anywhere that he actual signed a contract extention. All it says is that he met with team officials about a contract. We'll see...

Any NYY news would be that Pettitte will more than likely be back.

Go Jays!

Playing and being effective are two different worlds. My take is that he signed because he knows he has lost his edge.

Re: Rivera agrees to new Yanks contract

As previously posted by someone, the player hasn't been born that will choose a manager over money. Oh wait, that was me. Rivera is nowhere close to what he was, as he struggles now to strike out bums that he easily handled in the past. But he is a much better option to what's out there. It is doubtful he could ever live up to such a contract, meaning he is basically being paid for what he has done, not what he will do. However, if you can grab the cash, do it. Who wouldn't?

Mariano HAS to retire in a Yankees uniform. So the Yanks will do whatever it takes.

Exactly. I'm shocked they're willing to invest 3 years in a guy who clearly is on the downside of his career.

Re: Rivera agrees to new Yanks contract

A shaky Rivera is much better than any of their available options.

The Yankees say they will put Joba back in the rotation next year. He came up as a starter and they seem to want to keep him there.
