Girardi to manage Yankees

ESPN is reporting that Joe Girardi will be named the new manager of the New York Yankees this week. Bit of a surprise here, eh?

Re: Girardi to manage Yankees

They're going on a NY Daily News report that says Girardi is the new favorite. No confirmation yet.

Girardi is expected to named manager, Bud Selig wants no major announcements during the world series.

A decision could be announced as soon as later today or Tuesday according to most reports.

Well, if that's all that was holding it up, word should come today I would think.

That's just what I'm hearing but it didn't stop A-Rod.

Re: Girardi to manage Yankees

So what happens to Mattingly? Does a life-long yankee like himself take another position that may come open in the next year or so? Or does he stay on as an assistant with the yankees?

That's a great question. I can't imagine he'll just stick around and coach with the Yankees after this.

I am not a yankees fan at all. But I always loved watching Mattingly play. To me he was a true baseball player. It would be odd seeing him in anything but Yankee Pinstripes.

Re: Girardi to manage Yankees

Mattingly won't stay if he doesn't get the job. But I don't think any other team would make him a manager. So he may be stuck as a 1st base coach or a bench coach.

Cool Re: Girardi to manage Yankees

With the Red Sox winning 2 of 4 World Series, the Yankees can't worry about Mattingly's feelings. They have to pick the best guy. And Girardi is the better choice.

What they should do is let Mattingly manage in the minors to get experience.

Re: Girardi to manage Yankees

The Yankees will always take care of Mattingly in some capacity. Girardi is the right choice. If he fails, he can be jettisonned without much backlash, Mattingly can't be. The Yankees have been planning this the day Girardi was fired from the Marlins. Bet your house on that. I'm hopeful that this rumor is true.

No way Mattingly goes to the minors. He's in the majors to stay, whether it's with the Yanks or another franchise.

It will be weird seeing him in another uni.
