Former major league pitcher Steve Howe killed in truck accident
By BEN WALKER, AP Baseball Writer

Howe died yesterday when his truck rolled over near Los Angeles. Howe was a former Yankee pitcher and the 1980 NL Rookie of the Year, but was more famous with his constant struggles with cocaine and his seven drug-related suspensions. He was 48.

Cool Re: Steve Howe killed

Would anybody be shocked if he had alcohol in his blood? If he did, he's very similar to Ricky Williams - a guy who just can't excercise his demons.

Re: Steve Howe killed

It may have been "just" a traffic accident. Howe is no different than the millions who become drug and alcohol dependent-just with a higher profile. The Player's Union made sure he got all those chances, but so did owners who didn't care what he was into if he could get a batter out. Should he have gotten all those opportunities? Probably not, but each time he got one he most likely thought "I won't screw this up" only to fall back into the same pattern the farther away from each incident he got. He was the baseball equivalent of Robert Downey Jr., except he lost the ability to be of use to any team.

Re: Steve Howe killed

Still awaiting results of the toxicology report. How long do these things usually take, anyway?
