Mariano Rivera Tests Free Agency

Peter Abraham wrote this little tidbit in his latest blog...

Quote:
Meanwhile just spoke to somebody I know who is tight with Mariano Rivera. He said that Mo is more determined than ever to test the market after the developments of today.

Mo’s comment: “The Yankees are one of 30 teams now.”
Right now, I don't know if this means much since free agency doesn't begin for a few more weeks. The Yankees need Rivera since they don't have any other closer readily available. Don't be surprised if the Yanks offer some huge financial deal with all the years Mo wants to keep him.

Otherwise, they may be left without a closer if he gets a sweet deal elsewhere.

Let him walk if he is going to hold you up like a bandit. He will be being paid for what he did, and not for what he is actually worth now anyways. He will need to be replaced soon as it is. I think Joe Nathan might be availbale. If not, Joba, the job's yours.

Joba Chamberlain is a starter and the Yanks have been pretty adamant about that.

I thought they moved him to the pen so he could replace Rivera

They used him there down the stretch out of desperate need, but he was a starter in the minors. Since the season ended, the Yanks have insisted he will be in the rotation next season.
