New Yankee Manager Search

Now that Torre is out of the picture, the Yankees will now turn to finding a brand new manager. Wow, it's been 12 years since they've hired one. Well, who should it be?

Mattingly? Girardi? Piniella? LaRussa? Art Howe?

Re: New Yankee Manager Search

I have got 3 names Girardi, Mattingly, and Bobby Valentine. Valentine is managing in Japen and in think would do a good. But I think Girardi gets it.

BOBBY VALENTINE!!!! Now that's a good one! What a dog and pony show they would have in NY. It would be like the old Billy Martin days...I'd love it!

I'd be surprised if they get Girardi. His style is great with the young inexperienced players. I know the Yanks have had some rookies and whatnot, but they're still a veteran team. I don't think his style would work with them.

Re: New Yankee Manager Search

Joe Girardi interviewed yesterday, and according to the Associated Press, "Yankees bench coach Don Mattingly, scheduled to be interviewed Tuesday, is considered the favorite. New York first base coach Tony Pena is slated for a Wednesday interview... Steinbrenner said one or two others will be asked to interview -- but former New York Mets and Texas Rangers manager Bobby Valentine isn't on the list."

Cool Re: New Yankee Manager Search

I'd be the most shocked person on the planet if it isn't Mattingly. Absolutely shocked.

Re: New Yankee Manager Search

If Mattingly gets the job (and I think he will), disaster will be coming in 2008. With the precedent set, Mattingly must make the playoffs and go far or will his job be in jeopardy?

I think the Yankees have made it quite clear that the team needs to at least win one playoff series, or else the season's a disappointment. Would you want a job with that much pressure, those kind of high expectations? I sure wouldn't.

Cool Re: New Yankee Manager Search

Even if the Yankees don't win the first round, they won't fire Mattingly. If you think there was fans backlash after Torre, it will be worse with Donnie Baseball.

They'll give him more rope because it's his first year. Mattingly HAS to accept the job because this is the only managerial job he can get. No other team would hire him.

I think he'll do fine. Managing baseball is not brain surgery. And their payroll almost guarantees a postseason berth

I wouldn't say that. You can never account for horrible slumps, injuries, whatever else can happen during the six month season.

If Mattingly were to not lead the team to the post-season or lose a first round series, I can just hear all the Yankee fans begin to call for his head (even though he's beloved).

Re: New Yankee Manager Search

This just smacks to me like the Cornhuskers canning Frank Solich - the expectations are unrealistic, and the results will be disappointing.

Re: New Yankee Manager Search

Girardi is a better choice by Yankee brass, because if he doesn't deliver he can be fired with much less of a backlash, plus he is a good manager from what I have seen. He played with all of the long time veterans as well on those championship clubs.
