Cool Torre turns down Yanks offer

Joe Torre turned down this offer:

$5,000,000 for next year and $1,000,000 for every round of the playoffs he wins after that. So if they won the series he would make 8 million dollars.

And if he made it ( not won) to the World Series, an 8,000,000 million dollar option would have kicked in for 2009.

I don’t see anything wrong with that offer. Let him walk.

Re: Torre turns down Yanks offer

Wow, good for Joe. I don't know why he turned it down (not enough guaranteed money, length, no fruit baskets, whatever) but good for him.

Now unless they reach some sort of deal with him after the fact, it looks like the Yanks are left in the lurch.

Re: Torre turns down Yanks offer

Just a big ploy.... They made him an offer that wasn't insulting. He didn't like it so now they are free to look elsewhere which is prob. what they wanted all along but this way they save face,
Besides how old is that guy? Shouldn't he be worried about playing golf?

I think the offer should have included an extra $1 million every time big George opens his mouth.

Captain Caveman is married again now...maybe his new wife made him cut it. He is a local kid from down here...though his local ex-wife said some pretty ugly things about him as both a husband and father...

George is the one who made him cut it. He said I'll pay you $52 million but you need to look pretty.

Re: Torre turns down Yanks offer

I'm guessing this is probably because it was just a one-year base deal. After all these consecutive years of making the playoffs, he was probably looking for something with a little loyalty - especially after George shot his mouth off about canning him. Am I the only one who thinks this makes the Yankees look terrible? I mean, they threaten to can the guy, cave and give him a pretty nice offer and he slams the door in their face.

Ah, but who's the bully? George and the Yankees, or Torre? Looks like he's standing up to the bullies if you ask me.

Re: Torre turns down Yanks offer

It sounds like George Steinbrenner is just a figurehead. Whenever the son's are asked about their father's comments about firing Torre, they just wash it away like it was an old man talking.
