A survivor of the Son of Sam shootings is auctioning off a treasured piece of New York City history - the Yankees jersey Billy Martin wore when he skippered the team to victory in the 1977 World Series. Robert Violante said he's looking for a good home for a prized possession that has hung in his closet for 30 years. "It's not like the Barry Bonds ball. It has nothing to do with me getting rich off this," said Violante of Dyker Heights, Brooklyn. "If I had children or nieces or nephews, I'd pass this down to them. But I don't." The pinstriped jersey with the number 1 on the back is the same shirt Martin wore when the Yanks beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the dramatic sixth game of their contest and won their first championship in 15 years. Bids are being taken online at SteinerMarketplace.com through Nov. 13, starting at $10,000. "It could easily go for $30,000," said Jared Weiss of Steiner Sports. "This is Billy Martin's first World Series win as manager and it's in beautiful condition. It's a special piece with a lot of history attached to it." A tragedy that still haunts the 50-year-old Violante placed Martin's jersey in his hands.
