The local news reports say it's "probable" that Joe Torre will be brought back (given a new contract) to remain as the manager of the New York Yankees. No specifics other than it looks like the tide has turned inside Yankee land (ie. George Steinbrenner is no longer the threat he was in the past).

This is just a rumor at this point, but it does look like Torre is coming back.

Nobody really knows.

Ian O'Connor called Steinbrenner by surprise, and Steinbrenner told him that he wouldn't bring back Torre.

But we don't know how lucid Steinbrenner really is, and who is actually making this decision.

In today's Newsday:

Here's what Brian Cashman said:
"Nothing is taking place," Cashman said of discussions about Torre's return. "Anything before the meetings take place is pure speculation. Until I'm in a room and hear what's said, I'm not going to know."....... A source close to the situation said: "I think all the speculation is inaccurate. Every day, people have got to come up with a different way to present what's going on. I think it's all nonsense. Everyone's got an open mind and a clear head."

If you were Torre, would you want to go back and put up with the threats. He has been a great manager IMO, a HOF manager. He should not have to look over his shoulder every season.

Looking over your shoulder comes with the territory. He's a star here. He hob-nobs with stars all the time. Paul McCartney, Rudy Guliani, Billy Crystal...And get paid 7 million bucks, too....Plus, he gets a 200 payroll....

He definitely wants the job.

The word is the Yanks have decided to bring Torre back, but they don't want to pay him as much as they have (I think $7 million). So now they're working on contract details.

Nothing's official of course.
