Cool Yankees sign Carlos Pena

He'll play the roll that Tino played last year: A late defensive replacement for Giambi and spot starter. This might spell the end of Andy Phillips since Torre can play Miguel Cairo at 1st base if he needs a right handed bat at that position.

Good riddance to Andy Phillips. It took me five minutes to see that he couldn't hit major league pitching; how could it take Joe Torre five years?

Re: Yankees sign Carlos Pena

One factor: Wasn't Carlos Pena signed to a minor league contract? There is a big difference than starting at Yankee Stadium or in some deserted Florida stadium where they sell hot dogs at regular price (and not $4.50)

Re: Yankees sign Carlos Pena

I feel sorry for Andy Phillips. I mean, the guy only had five or six at-bats this year. Last night he was robbed of a two-run homer by a leaping Torii Hunter. He didn't have a great season last year, but he did hit a three-run home run against Boston in a big game. Yeah, he isn't great, but he's just as good (if not better) then Bubba Crosby who gets to stay. Pena is a good addition defensively, we'll just have to see how he does with the bat.

Cool Re: Yankees sign Carlos Pena

MJH: No. It was a major league deal for over a million dollars. There were other teams also bidding so the Yankees had no choice. However, since Pena hasn't been playing, he'll get in shape in the minors. This is where the Yankees have an advantage over all other teams. The can just spend 1 million like it's chump change and not even think about it. They just raise the price of Heineken from $9.50 to $9.75.

Legend: Your right about Torre. In the last few years he falls in love with stiffs: Example: Andy Phillips as you said, Felix Heredia and Scott Proctor just to name a few.

Hey I just realized: MJH has come out of retirement

Re: Yankees sign Carlos Pena

Torre also had a weird obsession with Kevin Brown.... *groan*

Scott Proctor at least isn't all bad, he pitched brilliantly against the Twins two days ago.
