Moose needs to retire!!!

THis man cant pitch anymore, its one thing to be smart and not have your stuff from your prime, its another to be an idiot and still not have your stuff. The man doesn't have the balls to pitch inside, every pitch is outside batters are just diving at the ball. You can have weak stuff and get by better then this. I know he has one year left on the contract, but the yankees either need to trade him,cut him, or make him retire. WHEN(just for you bears) the yanks make the playoffs i have no intrest in seeing Moose in the rotation

He might just need to adjust... I remember when Tom Seaver started losing velocity as a Red...he had to re-invent himself from a power pitcher to a finesse one ...same with Frank Tanana after he hurt his arm.

the problem isnt his stuff, he can get by with his stuff. I wish i could find an exact stat on the subject, but it really seems 8 out of every 10 pitches is on the outside half of the plate. When betters get wind of this they start diving on the ball, and the runs start getting high.

I agree Merv. I thought the Yankees had rocks in their head when they give him 2 years. Especially after his dismal post season efforts.

They should make him the middle man, after this year.

Re: Moose needs to retire!!!

Mike Mussina's a strange case... If he has perfect control, he'll pitch a good game... If his stuff is even slightly off, he'll get creamed. There's no middle ground... He's either good or terrible.

So, technically, he's not terrible all the time... But he's still incredible inconsistent.

Re: Moose needs to retire!!!

Yikes! Mussina was awful again last night, pitching only into the second inning and being rocked for 7 earned runs. The Yanks lost 18-9. Not cool.... (unless your name is Simon...)

Re: Moose needs to retire!!!

Mussina has no room for error when he ptiches now, and who can pitch like that? As for the Angels, they beat the Yankees like a rented mule now, especially out there. Garrett Anderson, who I absolutely despise, gets 10 RBI in a game and then insinuates how underappreciated he is by the home crowd.

Cool Re: Moose needs to retire!!!

They're actually talking about yanking him from the rotation.

Quote:
ANAHEIM, Calif. - Mike Mussina's back-to-back awful outings are not simply being taken in stride by the Yankees.

Pitching coach Ron Guidry acknowledged, "Yeah, I'm concerned." And manager Joe Torre hinted that Mussina must pitch better to stay in the rotation.

Mussina has given up seven runs in consecutive starts, and did so in only 1 2/3 innings in Tuesday night's loss to the Angels. When Torre was asked if Mussina would absolutely remain in the rotation, he said yesterday afternoon: "We're going to talk. After his next start we're going to talk ... The ability to pitch and pitch well is there somewhere. We just need to get it out."

Mussina had demonstrated that ability regularly for about two months, with just one bad outing during that time. But after two subpar starts in a row, that time feels long ago.

"I'll probably talk to him today and make sure that he's physically OK," Guidry said. "He pitched well for a long time, and then all of a sudden, pffft. Whether he's throwing the wrong pitches, or he's just struggling that much with location, I don't know."

Guidry said Mussina had not told him anything that would make him believe he was hurt. And Torre said that in a chat in his office, Mussina was baffled at his struggles because he said his arm felt so good.

Even though Mussina had not complained of any physical problems, and even said he was fine after his last start, Guidry wondered if there might be something wrong. He wondered aloud if something Mussina believed was a minor ailment, such as a tired arm or a tinge of soreness, was lurking beneath the surface. Perhaps, Guidry said, there was something wrong that Mussina believed he could pitch through and has not been able to.

Yet Mussina said nothing was wrong.

"One bad outing, you dismiss it as a bad outing," Guidry said. "Two bad outings, you start looking for what's wrong."

Good. I'm sick of Mussina getting a free pass, all the time.

Re: Moose needs to retire!!!

he has given up 6 runs, all earned, in only 3 innings ...... can you use him in the pen or bench him with that huge salary ?
