| Anniversary of Munson's Funeral Game I just watched the game that Bobby Murcer won with two swings of his bat the day they buried Thurman Munson in 1979. These are some of the observations I made. I saw at least six instances of batters going almost all the way around on check swings that were called balls, after the home plate ump checked with the first or third base ump. Today these would be certain strikes. Bucky Dent walked to lead off the winning rally in the ninth, but only after checking his swing twice in this way, one time almost going all the way around. Ron Guidry was the winner, throwing a complete game of 119 pitches and striking out 9 orioles. Today he would have been taken out in the seventh inning on a pitch count. Willie Randolph had a great game, with two hits and a sacrifice that the Orioles threw away to set up Murcer's winning double. The graphics were often spelled wrong, such as sacrafice instead of sacrifice, and HR's and RBI's, which indicates a possessive. Had Murcer not gotten his hit, Jackson and Nettles were up next. Weaver would have surely walked Jackson and pitched to Nettles, who looked like he was overmatched against lefty Tippy Martinez. Billy Martin let lefty Murcer bat with men on second and third. Today, he would have been pinch hit for. Don Drysdale, Keith Jackson, and Howard Cosell did the game. It was very difficult to differentiate between Jackson's voice and Drysdale. My observations lead me to believe that the actual game was better then than it is now with all the micromanaging and managerial moves, but the technology to bring it into our homes is umpteen times improved.
