Yankees Want Eric Gagne

SI's Jon Heyman writes the Yankees are looking towards the Rangers to acquire closer Eric Gagne. They'd want him to perform in a set-up role (obviously) and are one of a few teams who Gagne can't decline a trade to.

The Yanks would be willing to move some pitching prospects, but none of their top ones.

That would definitely be an improvement for the Yanks pen. Imagine having to go up against Gagne in the 8th, then Mo in the 9th.

Whoo, that would be nasty, so long as Gagne's healthy. What would the Yanks have to part with to get him?

Re: Yankees Want Eric Gagne

Any relief pitching would help the Yankees' bullpen... If he's healthy, Gagne would be an awesome set-up man for New York, sealing part of the gap between the starters and Rivera. And maybe the Yanks can go after a healthy Octavio Dotel for the seventh inning...

Here are some trade options:

unknown minor leaguers for Gagne
Scott Proctor + Kyle Farnsworth for Gagne
Kyle Farnsworth + Mike Myers for Gagne
Kyle Farnsworth + a couple bucks for Gagne

Re: Yankees Want Eric Gagne

Farnsworth wouldn't be moved...it would be pitching prospects that would go to Texas.

The Yanks do want to get rid of Farnsworth in the worst way though...I think the best possible option would be the Tigers.

Re: Yankees Want Eric Gagne

the yanks dont need gagne, the patch to this team will be a patch that is a common thread with cashmans style not steinbrenners, Joba Chamberlain has been moved to the pen in AAA and looks like he could be replacing farnsworth for the 8th inning role, in a way to groom him for when the time comes for Mo to retire

besides texas wants joba, hughes, or melky for gagne you think cashman will get rid of his plan to get young as possible for an old broken relief pitcher, my vote goes to steinbrenner being talked out of this crazy idea

But remember, the Texas higher-ups are REALLY gullible (recall the Soriano trade)... so you never know what the Yanks could pull here.

The Yanks will never trade Hughes or Chamberlain, and Melky's become a great everyday player... so I can't see him being shipped out. I think the Rangers will want Farnsworth (please take him!!!!! maybe the Yanks can just pay Texas to take him off their hands!!), Proctor, and perhaps Karstens....

the obsession with proctor (and farnsworth) is that they both have great stuff during warmups/training (whatever you want to call it). Unfortunately it doesn't translate to in-game results. At this point, if they can find a taker, I'd dump ol' Farnsie, especially after clashing with Jorge. Hopefully Detroit is still interested. Don't worry, Joba (and Hughes) is on the way.

PS - for what it's worth, I was listening to an interview with Torre this morning on the FAN, Joe said Cashman wasn't there golfing at his charity event (against domestic violence) which he was expected to be at. He didn't come out and say it, but the two hosts and Torre hinted that this meant he was probably working the phone lines on the eve of the deadline.

Actually, he'd be great as a set up man for the 8th inning. The one thing the Yanks have to keep in mind is that Gagne wants to close so he probably wouldn't re-sign with them. So they better be careful what they give up for him.

We have seen this with the yankees alot get old out of their prime talent and watch them break down till they retire. Getting gagne is just going to cost them more then he is worth since the only one selling is the rangers, plus gagne is old and broken( i know a fitting yankee in the past) but not now, cashman has a plan and everytime their has been a need he has filled it from the minor leauges, and joba chamberlian is the answer look at his numbers, Plus if he doesnt fit in nicely proctor will be there to pitch int he 8th in the mean time and he is cheaper and more durable then gagne. Im not saying proctor is better then gagne, just i think he is a better option for future and present

im not suprised, cashman would be a fool not to see what it would take to fix his bullpen, i just dont want to the pay the price the rangers want. Im curious to see what they do with damon wheather they trade him or not, cause melky is playing so well and giambi is going to have to be the dh if he is on the roster.
