Yankee Pitching Staff's Future Potential

It seemed like everytime the Yankees brought up a new pitcher he did well and then got hurt. Guys like Hughes and Igawa though I know Igawa is playing. So my query is when these guys DO get healthy next year do the Yankees have the potential for a good or possibly very good pitching rotation?

Re: Yankee Pitching Staff's Future Potential

Unless they make some trades or sign some free agents, I don't see how their rotation next year will be "very" good.

Wang (very good)
Pettitte (very good)
Hughes (hopefully good)
Mussina (????)
Igawa

The first three in this rotation are great, but the others are questionable. And if one of these guys hits the DL, who will replace them? The Yanks need to go out and trade for some big-name starters this offseason if they want to have a great rotation.

Well having three guys is a great start especially with Hughes and Igawa being so young so they could have a good mix of vets and young talent out there is what I mean.

simon, I think you're being too hard on Wang and Hughes. I'd welcome them on my staff any day. Two very solid pitchers.

Ah, now see, the title mentions "future potential." Those two guys have no future.

Wang and Hughes are very good pitchers
Pettitte has a year or two left
Don't forger about Clippard. He had a few good starts.

They should let the others go. Most teams would be lucky to have 2 good starting pitchers. The yankees have 3 maybe 4 that are very good IMO

Pettite signed a 1 year deal so he's a free agent at the end of the year....

Re: Yankee Pitching Staff's Future Potential

Whoa, whoa, whoa there Simon... Chien-Ming Wang is a GREAT pitcher... one of the best in the AL. He has one of the more dominant pitches in baseball (his sinker), throws a lot of innings, has great poise and control on the mound, fields his position beautifully, and was the runner-up to for last year's Cy Young award.

Re: Yankee Pitching Staff's Future Potential

Well my point is do the Yanks have at least a start or a foundation for good starting staff with the talent they have and then surely they will make some moves in the offseason particularly in the bullpen. Doesn't sound like a team destined to stay the way they are now old and mediocre, sounds like they could have a future. Or am I being overly optimistic...for the Yanks!!

No, I think you hit it dead on. There are some younger guys, both as established stars and up-and-comers, who will be able to really help the Yanks rebound in '08 and '09 as long as George can keep his desire to spend in check. The farm system seems to be bearing fruit again. Wang's arrived, and I see only good things in the future for Hughes. Plus there are some of the other arms others - that those more familiar with the Yankees than I - have mentioned.
