Greatest Yankee of All-Time

Okay, this one should be fun. Who is the greatest player in New York Yankees history? Plenty to choose from, but you can only pick just one.

I can't argue against Ruth...but I am gonna take the Iron Horse Gehrig...
He batted clean up, which made pitching around Ruth impossible.

You really can't go wrong with just about anyone you pick. My vote goes to Mantle. Lots of Yankees were unreal on the field. Lots of Yankees were huge off the field icons. But Mantle was in his own league. How many other ballplayers have inspired parents to name their kids after his NUMBER? He was a phenomenal player and a huge cultural icon (of course, the Babe was too... but the Mick gets the slight edge from me).

Well Mantle is my personal favorite...but tough to give him the overall nod when he might not even rate as the best centerfielder they had.

I don't think it is a choice really. It has to be the Babe. When people talk baseball, Ruth is still mentioned today as if he were still playing. The Yankees play in "the house that Ruth built." He is revered by just about everybody that watches the game. I don't think the others are in his league.

Well, he was fat and did not look the part of a ballplayer so clearly I can not vote for him...

Ruth, DiMaggio, Gehrig, Mantle in that order. Some not on this list could easily be the greatest on many teams.

War took a toll on Joltin Joe's numbers but he took 10 titles I believe...

Anyone one high on Yogi Berra?

Re: Greatest Yankee of All-Time

I think Maris is another one of those guys like legend mentioned... on several other teams, he'd probably be the best. But not in the Bronx.

Re: Greatest Yankee of All-Time

You could argue for guys like Reggie, Munson, Whitey Ford, Guidry, Jeter, Bernie Williams, and the like if this were another team, but one with a history this rich they are just also rans. Maris had three 100 RBI years and hit 133 homers from 60-62, but injuries then took their toll.

Thats all well and good, but you all are forgetting that he broke the single season home run record (that Babe Ruth previously held) in 1961, maris's record wasnt beaten until 1998, thats 37 years later by 2 guys who cheated and did steroids..
Maris is #1 my book hands down..

Based on one incredible season? Nah, I can't buy into that. Career wise he just doesn't stack up to Ruth, Mantle, Joe D.

For suffering for his play he has to rate up their with Gehrig and the knee ravished Mantle...Man the guy, a two time MVP, took a bloody beating in New York...

While not the greatest Yank...I rather see him in the Hall than a dozen other guys with their name there...

Absolutely. Gehrig was a legend, and the only thing holding him back on this list is the quality of competition for All-Time Greatest Yankee.
