When
Joe Torre voiced his displeasure with the Daily News last weekend, there turned out to be another voice behind that anger:
George Steinbrenner.A source said that Steinbrenner was furious with Torre after reading the manager's comments questioning
Alex Rodriguez's "Ha!" play in Toronto, a play the Blue Jays claimed was a "bush league" move.
The story, first reported by SI.com, goes that Steinbrenner called
Brian Cashman to give the general manager an earful, which Cashman then relayed to Torre. Before his media session on Saturday at Fenway Park, Torre expressed his unhappiness over the Daily News' back-page headline about the Rodriguez story in its early edition, which read: "Torre to A-Rod: Shut Up!"
Torre declined comment on the matter before last night's game, while Cashman was unreachable, as he was in Tampa for the Yankees' draft.
Steinbrenner's spokesman,
Howard Rubenstein, would neither confirm nor deny the story, saying, "George and the Yankees are not discussing it."
