Can the Yanks score 1000 runs in 2006?

The Journal News Yankees writer Peter Abraham thinks so.

"No team in baseball has scored 1,000 runs since the Indians put up 1,009 in 1999. That could change this season," he claims in an April 1 article. "Johnny Damon and Derek Jeter will get on base ahead of Alex Rodriguez, Gary Sheffield, Hideki Matsui and Jason Giambi. The last three guys in the order are veteran All-Stars Bernie Williams and Jorge Posada and budding All-Star Robinson Cano. If you're a pitcher, who can you work around? Joe Torre has already proclaimed this the best lineup he has managed. But, he cautions, the key in the postseason will be how well they can create single runs. 'Scoring 10 runs in one game doesn't give you a five-run lead the next day,' Torre said."

So does anyone think this lineup legitimately has a chance to score 1,000 runs?

I sure don't. They're good, but not THAT good.

LMAO, great thread foreshadowing.

Already on their way with 11 runs through 3 innings....there's no telling how much they'll have by the end of the game.

Cool Re: Can the Yanks score 1000 runs in 2006?

The Yankees would have to average over 6 runs a game. I don't think they'll do it. But all that matters is how many they score in October.

Only 985 runs to go! Definitely a great start for this impressive lineup. Even Damon, who traditionally isn't too good on Opening Day, got into the act. Sure, its only one game and in no way and indicator for what might happen down the road, but if they keep hitting like this... who knows?

It was against Zito who has been falling apart at the seams in recent seasons. Rich Harden shouldn't allow this kind of offensive output.

The Yanks have scored 301 runs this year (the most in the major leagues). That's an average of 6.02 runs a game, so they're on pace for 972. Can they make up those extra 28 runs? Even without the bats of Matsui, Sheff, and some of the other injured players?

With Melky cabrera in for Matsui? And now who knows what's goanna happen with Sheffield who's hurt again. I don't think they can do it.

Re: Can the Yanks score 1000 runs in 2006?

No they won't, but that's not to say some good things are not happening for NY right now. If Cabrera proves he can hit, and his outfield play improves, he is a viable option to Sheffield, who I know deep down the Yanks would love to part with before his steroid drama unfolds. That money could then be used for a starting pitcher or some bullpen help. Cairo, who I was really down on after he dropped that throw at first and whiffed 4 times against Boston earlier, has proven to be a valuable and versatile replacement part. Even Andy Phillips is starting to look like a major league hitter, something I could never have imagined just three weeks ago.

Re: Can the Yanks score 1000 runs in 2006?

I don't think so.

As you might have noticed, Peter Abraham entered this article into his journal before Matsui went down with a wrist injury. I am sure that his opinion would change now without Hideki Matsui in LF who went onto the DL with only 21 runs (which is nothing compared to his usual 109 runs per season). Without Matsui at the plate for a few months, the Yankees won't have the same kind of run production.

My final answer is, "no".

Heck...such negativity...I am gonig to have to cheer them on to a record...come on Yanks...seven runs a game is not all that much to ask for the payroll you have...

That is very funny, Gotham Dark Knight. The Yankees have one of the biggest payrolls in sports history and they just aren't that amazing. As Lefty Noob mentioned before, they are good--but not that good.

They definitely have the potential to challenge for the World Series Crown at the end of the season. For the Yankees' huge payroll I think anything above nine runs is acceptable. But, is that possible? I'm not sure if the record holders have a high-6.22 runs per game average!

If all the Yankees' athletes are healthy and at their finest, then we can speak about breaking records. Until then, I will continue to speak negatively against the Yankees breaking the record. Not that I am a pessimistic type of person but I just think that record is out of their reach.
