Leiter retires

Al Leiter hung it up after a 19 years career. True to Yankee form, we got rid of him when he was 23 and got him back when he was 39! He never won more than 17 games, going 162-132 lifetime. But he was 8-3 in the postseason, with his team going 21-11 in his playoff appearances. Very big in New York charities, especially after 9/11, and may go to work for the Yankees now as a broadcaster. In 2002, he became the first pitcher to have beaten all 30 major league teams. He was not on a par with Andy Pettite, but was a pretty good left handed pitcher.

Re: Leiter retires

Lieter had a couple great games for New York, like the brilliant game he pitched against Boston last year...

Cool Re: Leiter retires

He also had huge games with the Marlins in the 97 series. Unfortunately, the Yankees traded him for Jesse Barfield - one of the worst deals in Yankee history. Let that be a lesson to other teams - NEVER trade a young lefthanded pitcher who throws smoke.

Met fans are going to learn this by watching Scott Kasmir become a star and Victor Zambrano continue to a be a bust.

Re: Leiter retires

The Zambrano/Kazmir deal always confused me... what did the Mets really think they were getting? And couldn't they (like everyone else could) see Kazmir's growing talent?

Re: Leiter retires

I always liked Leiter, and he was a solid pitcher for many years. His 8-3 postseason record shows that he was great in the clutch!

Re: Leiter retires

Someone's got to say it:
"Why couldn't he have retired before the World Baseball Classic?"
