As of yesterday, every story concerning the right-hander will start with glowing observations from Jason Giambi and Todd Pratt.

The two veterans with a combined 24 years of big-league experience compared the 20-year-old to Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling, this after one batting practice session against Hughes at Legends Field.

"We could have used him last year," said Giambi, who didn't get a fair ball out of the cage against Hughes. "He looks like a young Rocket."

Iratt sees Schilling's ability in Hughes.

"[Philadelphia's] Brett Myers and Schilling," the veteran catcher said, when asked whom Hughes reminded him of. "He has life on the fastball and movement on the slider. His curveball is deadly. That reminded me of Myers."

Let's hope he is half as good as everyone is saying. Yankee fans need to see it with their own eyes first, havng suffered through a long line of home grown hurlers that ultimately just made us want to hurl.

Is Mussina their opening day starter? I'd like to see this kid on the mound.

He seems to have great potential, but I'm not sure if he's ready to crack the big leagues.

The Yanks want to take their time with Hughes so I doubt you'll see the kid in the big leagues until September (barring any string of injuries in the rotation). But he is always talked about as being one of the best starters as far as prospects goes. You know the Yanks are counting on him being a top guy for them for a long time.
