Mariano Rivera leaving Yanks?

In a recent Associated Press article, Mariano Rivera discussed the possibility of leaving the Yankees. "If they want to talk, we're willing to listen," the New York closer told reporters Monday. "But I'm going to bring nothing to the table. I'm just going to focus on what I have to do and see what happens. I have a contract for this year. That's what matters. All I have to do is focus on this season. I just have to worry about being able to help the team as much as I can."

Yankees can't possibly let Mo walk... can they?

Cool Re: Mariano Rivera leaving Yanks?

That's just negotiating in public and it's working already. Mike Francessa of WFAN radio today was saying that the Yankees CANNOT let Rivera walk under any circumstances.

I don't love Francessa but I have to agree with him here. Rivera has been soooo underpaid the last few years, that even if the Yankees overpaid him, it's okay. Look at all the guys who stole money from the Yankees like Pavano, Sheffield, etc.....

So Rivera's public posturing will work. Smart move.

Re: Mariano Rivera leaving Yanks?

But, what will Mariano Rivera consider a good deal? Hopefully, he wont use Alex Rodriguez as a base for the proposal.

Re: Mariano Rivera leaving Yanks?

If the Yanks allow Rivera to walk away, it'd be as bad as if they let Jeter walk away. It doesn't matter that the guy is older because he's still as dominant. If they're that concerned about his shoulder, I don't know but you can't low ball the guy in negotiations.

Re: Mariano Rivera leaving Yanks?

He's not going anywhere. As for Bernie, he should have seen the handwriting on the wall and left under his own steam gracefully. 64, 70, 64, and 61 RBI the last four years and he is now 38 years old.

Re: Mariano Rivera leaving Yanks?

Both of them have definitely left their mark on Yankee Stadium. But with the construction of the brand-new future home of the Yankees across the street, will they be leaving as well?

There is a better chance that Mariano Rivera will return, because Williams is probably insulted.

I agree also. I'm a Yankee-hater but I admit that Rivera is the greatest reliever of all time. But then again....do you think Rivera is better than Eckersley was?

Re: Mariano Rivera leaving Yanks?

Mo is one of the best closers of all time. And I sincerely hope the Yankees give Mo an Extension. I couldn't bare to see mo close for another team.

Re: Mariano Rivera leaving Yanks?

Mo is the best of all time and it's about time he gets paid like it. Whether this is his agent talking through him or not, if the Yanks don't pay up, he'll leave. Can't blame the guy.

Imagine the outcry if it does happen.
