Cool Yankees trading Melke?

In today's New York Newsday:

The Yankees continue to debate internally whether they should trade outfielder Melky Cabrera for Pittsburgh closer Mike Gonzalez.
Melky deal still being considered - Newsday.com
I think this would be a huge mistake. I hate when they trade good home grown players. What does everyone else say?

If they can get Mike Gonzalez, they've gotta do it. Melky is a nice player but you can get corner outfielders whenever you want. You can't get great lefty set-up man at a whim.

Re: Yankees trading Melke?

I heard someone say that he was traded to the Braves. I guess not.

Re: Yankees trading Melke?

No, the Atlanta trade fell through. Gonzalez would definitely bolster your bullpen; he's an underrated reliever in my book.

Re: Yankees trading Melke?

I think trading Melky would be the right move for the Yanks. Think about it- where is his spot on the team right now? Matsui is far superior in left (offensively) and if healthy will play every single game of the year (remember his 3 consecutive years without missing a game). Cabrera would get very few chances to play, and would probably have a hard time adjusting to the routine of a bench player. It's not fair to Melky to keep him on the team, and the Yankees could better fill his roster position with a reliever.

How 'bout Linebrink or Meredith from the Padres? Or Heilman from the Mets?

DO NOT TRADE MELKY, matsui damon and abreu have all shown in the last year that they know where the DL is, i say you use him as the fourth OF he is only 23 guys. He plays left center and right, what better 4th outfielder can you get. In the New Jersey Star ledger they quote an unnamed yankee offical that says the chances of trading melky for gonzalez are fading quickly.

Cool Re: Yankees trading Melke?

I agree with Mervin. I hate trading young players like that. The only time the Yankees held on to their core of young players, they became a dynasty.

Aren't they lucky that they didn't trade away that little kid named Derek at short?
