Yankees Trade Sheffield to Tigers

Breaking news as of about an hour ago, the Yanks have traded Gary Sheffield to the Detroit Tigers for three pitching prospects. RHPs Humberto Sanchez, Kevin Whelan and Anthony Claggett.

Here are some of their stats from ABCNews

"The 23-year-old Sanchez was a combined 10-6 with a 2.53 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 123 innings with Triple-A Toledo and Double-A Erie this year. Whelan, 22, was 4-1 with a 2.67 ERA and 27 saves for Class A Lakeland. Claggett, 22, was 7-2 with an 0.91 ERA and 14 saves for Class A West Michigan."

Re: Yankees Trade Sheffield to Tigers

So let me get this straight. The Yanks dump Sheffield, who they didn't want anyway, and pick up 3 pitching prospects who look decent at the very least? Great deal by Cashman.

Sanchez is a top pitching prospect, and the other two are pretty good themselves. Nice move by Cashman.

In defense of Cashman, the Sanchez kid appears to be the key part of the deal. Some say he projects to be a Closer in the majors.

Well, they get a bigtime righty bat which they desperately needed. Their line-up will look more menacing with Sheffield batting clean-up I presume.

Cool Re: Yankees Trade Sheffield to Tigers

You absolutely have to give Cashman credit. They basically got compensation for a free agent instead of getting nothing and it's all young pitching...

Regarding Sheffield, good riddance. I wouldn't have given him two extra years. He's been injured the last 2 years and will be 41 when his contract runs out, but Sheffield does this to every team. He blackmails them and says he won't play hard unless they extend his contract.
