Alex Rodriguez Makes Comments About Jeter in Esquire, 2001

In April 2001, an article was done on Alex Rodriguez and his agent, Scott Boras after they signed the now infamous contract with the Texas Rangers. They would have to go on a sort of media blitz to get A-Rod good PR (instead of being the greedy, money hungry A-hole some think of him as). This is the infamous article where A-Rod made some remarks about Derek Jeter and ever since, Jeter has reportedly held a grudge.

Here are the quotes...

"Alex is unsmiling, hard-faced. "The thing about Mike Lupica that ☻☻☻☻es me off," he says, "is that he makes me look like the biggest dickhead in the world, and then he takes a guy like Jeter and just puts him way up there.""

"So much for the brotherhood of shortstops united under the fatherhood of Honus Wagner.

"There's a big difference," says Boras. "Jeter had seventy-one RBIs and fifteen home runs. Jeter and Nomar last year had fifteen and twenty-one home runs. You can have a golden bulldozer, but if there's no dirt to push..."

"Jeter's been blessed with great talent around him," Alex says. "He's never had to lead. He can just go and play and have fun. And he hits second--that's totally different than third and fourth in a lineup. You go into New York, you wanna stop Bernie and O'Neill. You never say, Don't let Derek beat you. He's never your concern."

"Remember," Boras says, "when the troops are marching, who's the first to die?"

"The leader of the pack," Alex answers.

"The leader. Being a leader, you're always gonna take the bullet. Whenever one of these contracts is done, it's the worst decision in baseball. This is part of the tradition of our game.""

I can see how Jeter would ☻☻☻☻ed at his former close friend...but you'd think the 4 rings he has would be enough to throw the comments aside. Still, LOL @ how the Yankees may be suffering because of this today.

I never knew that Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez had their differences. I always thought that they were the best of friends! Now I can finally understand why their team chemistry is in the gutter!

Okay so what's with jeter holding a grudge?...What, no one picks up the phone in sports and clears the air?...Do we have another McNabb text message to TO?

They should both grow up...and throw in Big Papi as well into the mix...

Nobody gets along with Big Papi. I wonder what he is like once you get to know him.

Like any other star player that's driven...he has a major ego...that doesn't mean he can't be a good guy too..

Shawn Green is a great person in real life. When he was with the Dodgers in 2001, he was not cocky at all. Now after his strengths have weakend, he is still the same Shawn I've known for the past ten years.

And who cares?

A-Rod shouldn't have to be "taken care of" by Jeter. Just get out there and play for goodness sake!
