Yankees History Dates Back To Corruption and Crime

In a very interesting interview at the NBX Sports Blog, they sit down with Bill Cleary who's great grand uncle was one of the original co-founders of the New York Yankees. "Big" Bill Devery bought the Yankees and Frank Farrell purchased a Baltimore ball-club for just $18,000 in 1903 and sold the Yankees team in 1915.

The interview goes into detail about Devery's shady history in the New York Police Department. Also, the bloggers show an attempt by the New York Yankees to hide this shady history.

Very interesting stuff.

Could be worse…they could have been part of a Black Sox type scandal (like the White Sox) or sold the Babe to finance a play (like the Red Sox)…

While the Black Sox Scandal was shameful and thoroughly unacceptable, it really didn't need to happen. If Charles Comiskey, the Sox owner at the time, hadn't been such a chiseling tightwad, the guilty players probably wouldn't have even been tempted to throw games. He went to ridiculous extremes to keep his employee costs as low as possible, including ordering his manager not to use players who were just about to qualify for performance bonuses. He was a despicable individual, in my opinion.

Some where between him and the Yankee's current payroll is the right answer…
And maybe it’s the name Charles…I remember Charlie Finley being pretty bad as well...
