Joe Torre To Be Replaced With Lou Piniella

Well it looks like the expected is about to go down. The Daily News' Bill Madden is reporting that George Steinbrenner will fire Joe Torre if he does not resign. He will replace him with Lou Piniella. Bill Madden said this is the angriest he's sign George in a LONG time and that they will make every effort to try and trade A-Rod.

Torre fired is good, but I'm not sure Lou is the right guy to replace him. What about a Girardi or a Dusty Baker?

Mattingly? They can't hit with him, what makes you think they'd turn around under him.

I don't know if Lou is the right guy but whatever happens, the Yanks need pitching and lots of it.

Just throwing the name out there. George has a tendency to recycle managers. I'd like to see him think outside the box and go for a fresh face, maybe even one without previous ties to the franchise. The team badly needs to be injected with some new blood, from the players on up, I'd say.

This team needs to acquire hitters that hit in the clutch. Get rid of A-Rod and half your problem goes with him. He is to the Yankees what Jonah was to the fisherman he sailed with, so throw him overboard. 4 for his last 41 in the postseason. Those are pticher's numbers.

Re: Joe Torre To Be Replaced With Lou Piniella

Does it matter who manages a team with a $200 MILLION payroll?

Lefty Baker is not a bad pick considering that this team has talent and just needs a guy that has good people skills.

I think in a line-up like this managers are overrated...at best they will affect the outcome of 5-10 games...at best.

Re: Joe Torre To Be Replaced With Lou Piniella

A guy like Piniella who is all fiery and will call out players in public may not be what the Yanks need. Although Steinbrenner likes guys like that, it could result in players playing even worse.

The Yanks have succeeded in large part because of Torre's leadership behind the scenes. Don't underestimate that.

Obviously, it does.... Torre has proved that.

Maybe Bernie Williams should retire from playing, and manage the team. Perhaps that'd work. Williams was a huge part of the Yankee winning seasons, he could bring that style of baseball back to New York.

LOL!!! MVB you're on fire today my man! Making posts better than mine (if that's possible! ). Still I agree that Girardi would be better for this team than Pinella. The game has passed Pinella by and he makes up for it by simply yelling at his players which ain't gonna work with this gang.

Nope...that is just assuming that the problem is all Torre...a team of superstar should win in spite...if you got paid for winning not just showing up...they might still be there...or if the Tigers pitching wasn't hot...Torre had very little to do with the success or failure of this over paid bunch...he is just a scapegoat...

Let's see, this year you guys have thrown Randy Johnson, A-Rod, and now Torre under the bus...sometimes...another team just gets hot in a playoff series...

But lets second guess Torre...name three moves he should have made that would have moved them past the Tigers?

Joe Torre is baseball's answer to Barry Switzer.

Game 1:

- ( 7th inning) Wang has retired 6 in a row. Curtis Granderson comes up ( 2 outs, none on) and Torre brings in Myers. Why? ( Myers allowed a homer, giving Torre the notion that he couldn't make an appearance in any other game)

Game 2:

- (1st inning) Runner on first, no one out. Jeter bunts. ????????

- ( 2nd inning) Runners on first and second, one out, Cano batting.

Time for hit-and-run. All we needed was one more run.

- ( 7th inning) Mussina has a runner on third, one out. Mussina is obviously running out of gas, why can't Proctor come in? He rescued our starters all year, why not here? ( He had yesterday off too)

Remember, one more run for the Yanks, and they win the ballgame.

Game 3:

- ( 7th inning) Johnson should have never pitched this inning.

- ( 3rd inning) Yanks down by 3, Cano leads off inning with a single. Have Damon ( who was 0 for 4 in the game) bunt, so Jeter has a chance to drive in a run against Rogers.

- ( 5th inning) Runner on second, no outs. Let Sheff pinch-hit.

- ( 7th inning) Runner on second, one out. Another chance for Sheff to pinch hit. ( All Williams was doing was striking out.)

Game 4:

- Giambi's not in the lineup????? He's been the Yankee co-MVP all year! He homered in Game 1, just missed a homer in Game 2, and doesn't have atrocious numbers against Bonderman ( couple of hits, couple of walks in 15 at-bats).

- If A-Rod couldn't hit Rogers ( who he's KILLED in the past), he does not deserve to be in the lineup.

A couple other numbers:

- Torre only tried 1 hit-and-run.

- The Yankees only had 1 stolen base ( Giambi, Game 1) in the entire series. Torre didn't even have his players attempt a stolen base in the final three games!!!!

- After Game 1, Torre told the media that all he does is sit back and let the players do what they want on the field. WHAT??? All Torre does anymore is make the lineup cards out, sit back, and watch. He's not a manager, he's a spectator. Laissez-faire

Re: Joe Torre To Be Replaced With Lou Piniella

Let me ask you something MVB...were you criticizing Torre and calling for his job while the Yankees ran away with the division and earned the sharing of the best record in the game? Or is it just after the playoff collapse?

Re: Joe Torre To Be Replaced With Lou Piniella

Since Spring Training, I've been calling for Joe Torre to retire... I loved what he did in the '96-'00 era of Yankeedom, but since 2001, he's been very bad.

( I've hated his bullpen management since he joined the team. )
