| Re: Joe Torre To Be Replaced With Lou Piniella I think it's about time the Yankees start considering the possibility of fielding a quality team with decent chemistry, not one with an all-star player at every position. Steinbrenner doesn't so much want to win a World Championship as he wants to dominate every opponent in every game---a thoroughly unrealistic goal. There is no such thing as a perfect manager so, no matter who the Yankees hire to replace Torre, he will come up short in some way, especially with New York sports writers and unrealistic fans. Steinbrenner complicates the problem by being a very public micro-manager. He couldn't possibly hire a soft-spoken laid-back personality, because his managers have to defend almost everything they do on a frequent basis. Instead of putting all their energy into deciding who to hire as the team's manager, I think the Yankees would be well served to take a hard look at their entire operation with a self-critical approach. Throwing more money at the situation, the team's preferred remedy for solving problems, has been tried repeatedly and, lately at least, has proven to be a collosal failure. (I bet my self-critical analysis suggetion will never be considered by Steinbrenner and his minions.) |
