| Torre passes Miller Huggins With the Yankees 9-6 win over Baltimore yesterday, Yankees manager Joe Torre moved back Miller Huggins into third place on the all-time win list among NY managers. Torre has won 1,068 games in his Yankee career. How do you guys think he compares to Huggins in terms of managerial ability?

| Re: Torre passes Miller Huggins Huggins was a player/manager and then manager of a bad Cardinal team, but then took over the Yankees, who would acquire Babe Ruth two years later. he won four World Series and six AL pennants before dying at the end of the 1929 season, from an infection that resulted in blood poisoning. Huggins had Ruth and Gehrig , but only together for his last few years with the club. He had to deal with Ruth's personality, which was not easy. In 1925, he had to fine Ruth $5,000 for his showing up late to batting practice and his all-around carousing. Management backed Huggins, and Ruth had to apologize to Huggins before he could return! Huggins was said to be a great baseball mind and was regarded as the game's best manager when he died at age 49. Torre had a rather undistinguished career as a skipper before taking over the Yankees. Torre's greatest asset by far is his handling of the egos and the NY media. His on-field moves are no better and no worse than most, but his players love him and play hard for him. To survive this long with Steinbrenner must say something about him.

| Re: Torre passes Miller Huggins Joe Torre is a great manager and I always hate it when there a rumors that he might be leaving the Bronx. His job is in jeopardy every year and somehow he holds onto it. |
