Rangers Sign Scott Gomez and Chris Drury

Talk about making a splash, the New York Rangers have signed both Gomez and Drury.

From a Canadian Sportsite: "Sportsnet.ca has learned that the New York Rangers have signed free agent rival Scott Gomez to a seven-year deal worth $51.5 million, as well as free agent Chris Drury to a five-year, $35 million deal."

HUGE Signings, especially getting Gomez away from those Diablos.

WOW.
Are the Rangers stocking up on stars again? cause it didn't work for them the last time they tried this.
Where does the $$ keep coming from?

HUGE, arguably the 2 biggest names on the free agent market....with these aquisitions, the Rangers should now be considered serious cup contenders next season. Drury, Gomez, Jagr, Shanahan, Lunqvist, and possibly Nylander.....u cant go wrong with those names in ur lineup uve gotta be happy if ur a rangers fan.

Cool Re: Rangers Sign Scott Gomez and Chris Drury

On paper, how could you argue? But the Rangers have taken this path before and signed free agent after free agent and have always failed. Hopefully that will be the case.

Re: Rangers Sign Scott Gomez and Chris Drury

with the cap in place, how are they able to afford these guys?
and yeah, they've been down this road before and failed miserably.

I've been trying to figure it out - the cap thing - is it a matter of a whole bunch of $$ up front, so that a few years later, when you are paying say jagr 2 mill instead of 8 mill, you can then afford Drury?
oh yeah, and Gomez?
And Shanahan?
And Lundqvist?

I can't speak for the NHL cap, but I know if it's anything like the NFL, the contracts will be backloaded and there will be lots of bonus money involved since it doesn't count. Again, I'm not an NHL expert so I don't know if this is true in hockey or not, but that's how it works in pro football.

Re: Rangers Sign Scott Gomez and Chris Drury

Yeah, i think that is part of how they work it.
It also says in the paper re Briere and Gomez that each will make 10 mill his first year and two mill the 8th year. Front loaded, plus i am sure, bonuses.
I wonder how they will manage to eke out an existence on a mere 2 million that final year of the contract.
Poor boys.

The Rangers better win with these moves. 86 million dollars will hamstring them in the future....Look at what that Alexi Yashin deal did to the Islanders.
