Rangers Goaltending Future

What is going to happen to the future of goaltender Al Montoya with the emergence of Henrik Lundqvist as a legitimate #1 goalie? Montoya has been so highly touted and has not disappointed this season with the Hartford Wolfpack. I wonder if the Rangers could get adequate value in a trade for Montoya considering Lundqvist's status...

If I'm the Rangers, I trade Kevin Weekes during the offseason, bring up Montoya next season to back up Lundqvist and see if Montoya has what it takes to play at the NHL level. If he does, you have the best 1-2 prospects in net for the price of peanuts.

Secondly, I tie up Lundqvist to a billion year contract while he's still cheap.

You think Lundqvist is still cheap? The entire hockey world knows what us Ranger fans learned early on - this guy is for real. I just wonder if it wouldn't be interesting to shop Lundqvist in the offseason...buy low, sell high....

Cheap? Compared to Hasek, Brodeur, Turco, etc? Hell yeah he's going to be cheap. He may or may not be for real, but he's still a rookie, and under the CBA, rookies don't make squat. Sidney Crosby is by far the biggest rookie to come in the NHL in years and he makes a whopping $850,000 a year for 3 years (with bonuses that allow him to max out at $12 mil over three years.

Shopping Lundqvist on the offseason is so dumb that the Rangers might actually do it.

Don't be silly - the Rangers would only shop Lundqvist if Neil Smith was still their GM.

Re: Rangers Goaltending Future

I talk about this all the time with my friend who's a felllow Ranger fan who's in Michigan so he knows all about Al Montoya. Montoya is seriously the best goalie in our system and the belief hasn't changed. That's whats scary...that Lundqvist isn't even the best in our organization.

Of course, Montoya hasn't played on the pro level yet while Lundqvist has proved himself in the Olympics and is doing so in the NHL. A nice problem to have indeed.
