Willie Randolph said in a radio interview Pedro Martinez will be placed on the 15-day disabled list because of his right calf problem.

With the Mets situation now, there was no real reason not to place him on the DL. Now he can rest up and make sure he's ready for the playoffs. This is probably the only benefit of having a 10+ game lead in the division.

I thought this was a smart move on behalf of the organization. Martinez has been injured a lot in the past few years--mainly concerning his toe. I think Pedro Martinez should return well rested and capture some more wins this season to raise his low-win total of 9.

The Mets have called up pitcher Dave Williams to make the start later today versus Colorado. It was between Williams and Oliver Perez and I guess they didn't want to mess with Perez's situation in Triple-A at the moment (they're working to get him back on track). Tonight's also the big 1986 World Series Championship NY Mets Celebration.
