Billy Wagner called former Phillies teammate Cory Lidle "chicken" yesterday for blasting the Phils only after Lidle was out the door.

Wagner basically agreed with Lidle's message - that the Phillies were uninspired and didn't exhibit a winning attitude every day. But the Mets closer thought it was cowardly to speak up only after leaving town.

"I don't think that's the way you handle it," he said before last night's game against Philly. "I may not be liked, but I said my piece [to his teammates] while I was there. And that's the way it should be. You should be accountable.

"I think that's kind of chicken that Cory said it out the door. I don't think Cory has very much room to talk, to be honest with you."

Last July, Wagner declared the Phils "ain't got a chance" of making the playoffs and called his teammates quitters without enough intensity. Later, during a team meeting, he said Pat Burrell called him a "rat" and thought it was a "24 against one" attitude in the clubhouse.

Too bad the Yankees don't play the Mets again this year....But it seems like something is VERY wrong in that Phillies clubhouse.

Tell you what the rat pitched beautifully a few days ago! Id give him a hunk of cheese for that performance. Cant we all just get along?

Wagner is a competitive liittle bleep...he comes from a rough childhood and seems to have a chip on his shoulder...I don't think Lidle qualifies as a coward.

Well Wagner does have a point. Lidle talked about Philly after he was gone. If he was unhappy with something, why not say it while he was there.

Maybe Lidle does not embrace the TO approach to locker room communications...

Lidle does have a lot to say for a mediocre pitcher.
