Pedro to DL, Pelfrey and Owens Called Up

Pelfrey to start Saturday; Pedro on DL - Newsday.com

Pedro Martinez is on the disabled list and the Mets called up Double-A Binghampton closer Henry Owens.

Jose Lima is scheduled to pitch tomorrow night and will then be sent down. Mike Pelfrey will be called up to pitch one of the double-header games on Saturday. John Maine will start the other, both are against the Florida Marlins.

Nobody knows if Pelfrey will be here to stay or if this is a one shot deal. Frankly, he should stay and gain from the experience. Nothing can hurt unless he's just ungodly awful....which he won't be

How bad is Pedro's injury? Is he looking at 2 weeks, or longer?

Re: Pedro to DL, Pelfrey and Owens Called Up

They put him on the DL because A) they don't want to rush him and would like him to get as much rest as possible and B) they need a starter for Saturday. Pedro's hip has been a pain for the better part of a month now. He won't be eligible to return until July 14th so he shouldn't miss more than a couple of starts (this weekend's included).

I watched some of that 2nd game Saturday and I think Pelfrey pitched mediocore, he threw over 100 pitches in 5 innings walked 4 or 5 batters and also hit a batter and allowed 3 runs. He needs more seasoning in my humble opinion. But who am I to say, he got the win.

Re: Pedro to DL, Pelfrey and Owens Called Up

Pelfrey is likely to go back down once Pedro comes off the DL. He didn't look to have excellent command of the strikezone, but he was no Soler. Love his fastball which reaches the high 90s.
