Mets Could Fire Randolph Within Days

Willie Randolph's status as Mets manager is extremely tenuous now. General manager Omar Minaya is seriously considering changing managers and at least a couple of the team's coaches, sources told SI.com.

A Mets official indicated that nothing was expected to be decided today regarding Randolph's status. But that doesn't preclude something from happening later this weekend. Front-office sources indicate his hold on the job is shaky, at best.

Should Randolph be fired, bench coach Jerry Manuel will take over, sources told SI.com.

[...] Minaya is also weighing other changes, which could include removing hitting coach Howard Johnson and pitching coach Rick Peterson, sources indicate. Some organization people believe sweeping changes must be tried in order to jump-start the disappointing team.

Does everyone agree that this is the right move? And any word as to who could be tapped as the permanent replacement?

Re: Mets Could Fire Randolph Within Days

Minaya put this team of dogs together, he should be gone after this year. Moises Alou is a lifetime .303 batter but he has played in over 150 games just 3 times in 17 seasons. If the Hall of Fame had a Disabled List wing he would head it. Beltran is not a good fit for NY , which was known by everyone in the business before he signed. Delgado is so far over the hill he lives in a valley, plus he is of no help in the clubhouse. Reyes should be dealt now while he still has some value. When Willie goes, they need to bring in a fiery type, not Jerry Manuel. I wonder what Tom Kelly is doing nowadays.

Agree Minaya should be the FIRST to go. He has made bad move after bad move. He has always tried to build a team around a bunch of washed up has beens....Pedro, Wagner, Glavine, Laduca, delgado, Alou.
I think every GM makes an occassional bad move but this guy is crazy bad!
I look at teams like the Marlins, Devil Rays and Cleveland and how they built thier teams and I shake my head up and down... and then I look at the Mets and shake my head back and forth.

Willie is not the problem there!
