Willie Randolph Wonders if Race Is Contributing to the Rumors About His Job

Willie Randolph's team granted him a reprieve from the overwhelming whispering about his job security by pounding the Yankees twice this weekend. The discussions, if slightly muted, will continue and are sure to boil over when the team loses a few games in a row.

Randolph had avoided taking the bait to offer his own opinion until before Sunday night's game. Ian O'Connor of the Bergen Record spoke to him and reports that Randolph wondered why Joe Torre never got crushed for being the strong, silent type in the dugout and then pushed the conversation further.
"Is it racial?" Randolph asked. "Huh? It smells a little bit."
Asked directly if he believes black managers are held to different standards than their white counterparts, Randolph said: "I don't know how to put my finger on it, but I think there's something there. Herman Edwards did pretty well here and he won a couple of playoff [games], and they were pretty hard on Herm. Isiah Thomas didn't do a great job, but they beat up Isiah pretty good. ... I don't know if people are used to a certain figurehead. There's something weird about it.

Ah, vince, you took the words right out of my mouth.
Yeah, uh-huh, it's racial, because Joe Torre's job was NEVER, EVER in jeopardy, right?

Nope. His job might be in danger because they fell apart at the end of the year last year, and they have clubhouse turmoil this year.

What a load of crap.

Exactly. It's par for the course in New York. Race has nothing to do with it.

But playing the race card is a safe and easy excuse. Who wants to take the blame that the Mets suffered one of the biggest collapses in sports history at the end of last year and seems to be continuing on into this one?

Maybe, but it's pathetic. Clearly if he could make this team win it wouldn't matter if he was a talking dog or a little three-eyed alien. People would love him. It's all about wins and losses in this business, and with the talent on this Mets roster, they are clearly underachieving. To say otherwise, as Randolph is doing by making these outlandish statements, is to make yourself look ignorant and foolish.

smells a bit like Willie is full of crap

Herm is a crap coach ... he went 39-41 while coaching the Jets .... his last season he went 4-12 .... were the fans and media supposed to be nice to him ?

his Knicks coaching record is 56-108 .... talk about pathetic

and he may well be a racist
Quote:
After a heated 1987 playoff game against the Boston Celtics, Isiah Thomas made headlines for agreeing to a statement made by teammate Dennis Rodman, who said that Larry Bird was overrated because he was white in a league full of mostly black players. In response, Isiah said, "I think Larry is a very, very good basketball player. He's an exceptional talent, but I have to agree with Rodman. If he were black, he'd be just another good guy.
Isiah Thomas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
out of all the managers/coaches in NYC over the past several years ... Willie wants to hitch his wagon to these two winners

i think this can actually hurt people that indeed are battling racism .... this makes a mockery out of a serious issue

Poor decision by Willie to speak like this. It will only make things twice as tough now.
