Santana agrees to $150.75M, seven-year deal with Mets

NEW YORK -- Johan Santana and the New York Mets agreed Friday to a $150.75 million, seven-year contract, a record for a pitcher and the last major step needed to finalize the team's blockbuster trade with Minnesota.
After the sides were granted an extra two hours to work on a deal, the Mets announced about 30 minutes before the new 7 p.m. EST deadline that negotiations had concluded. The pitcher was scheduled to take a physical Saturday.
Terms of the agreement were disclosed by a baseball official with knowledge of the talks who spoke on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made

WOW $21.5 million per year. Not to shabby. I hope he can back it up with the numbers.

The sigh of relief...Mets fans breathing it.

Great move here and money well spent. Now as long as everyone passes their physicals, we can look forward to pitchers & catchers.

The only thing is, six years is a long time for a pitcher.

Yep but Santana is the best pitcher in baseball. It's not like we're giving Mike Hampton a boat load of money.

Is it a long deal? Yep, but it's ABSOLUTELY worth it. Glad to see the Mets were able to get a deal done - now let's see what he can do in the NL.

Cool Re: Santana agrees to $150.75M, seven-year deal with Mets

It's only actually $137.5 for 6 years. It could to 150 if Santana hits certain goals. But at this price, does it really matter?

From Yahoo:
Quote:
Santana and the Mets agreed Friday to a $137.5 million, six-year contract.

The deal includes deferred money and a club option for 2014 with a $5.5 million buyout that could make the contract worth about $150 million over seven seasons. Depending on Santana's performance, the option could become guaranteed.

From Yahoo:
Yeah I was at ESPN earlier and the headline had changed to 137.5 after it showed 150 last night

But when Mike Hampton signed his deal in 2000 ,people thought he was worth it. He went 22-4 in 1999 and was only 27 yrs old. Everyone thought he would be great for yrs to come.... no one thought he would fall apart like he did. Or look at Zito's deal. You never can tell with pitchers and generally any deal over 3 yrs ends up looking bad for the team and gd for the player.

Well, I'll let the team take their chances with acquiring Santana. They needed an ace and now they have one.

Pretty much every pitcher who signed these mega deals weren't worth it:

Kevin Brown, Pedro Martinez ( Was good for 2 years but last year he was hurt), Barry Zito, Carl Pavano...Show me a pitcher who signed a huge deal who was worth it. I can't think of any.

Pedro was well worth the money. He turned the franchise around. Literally.

Re: Santana agrees to $150.75M, seven-year deal with Mets

Huh? The first big move Minaya made when he was hired was to talk Pedro into coming to NY (and the 4th year didn't hurt, lol). Then Minaya was able to sign Beltran).

They didn't sign Delgado. Minaya traded for him.

Signing Pedro was the move that turned the franchise around. He made the Mets important again and gave them that legit superstar (Reyes and Wright were not there yet).
