Mets Close to Signing Livan Hernandez

The Rocky Mountain News reports the Mets are close to signing free-agent right handed veteran starter Livan Hernandez.

RINGOLSBY: Quiet winter for big spenders : Rockies : The Rocky Mountain News

If the Mets do bring him in, he will be teammates with his older brother, Orlando for the first time in the major leagues.

Yeah, but how much does he have left in the tank? And why do the Mets keep going after older pitchers?

I think the aging veteran only works if you have a core group of young guys that need mentoring. They are trying to get a core group of old guys to mentor 1 pitcher.

Cool Re: Mets Close to Signing Livan Hernandez

At least he'll give you innings. There's just not much on the pitching market right now.

Re: Mets Close to Signing Livan Hernandez

Right now without Livan (and Santana), they have...

Pedro Martinez, John Maine, Oliver Perez, El Duque, Mike Pelfrey and Phil Humber. Humber and Pelfrey will go into spring training trying to earn a rotation spot. So Livan Hernandez has pitched over 200 innings a ton of times, a rubber arm would help the Mets.

Of course if they can get Santana...

Re: Mets Close to Signing Livan Hernandez

Both Livan and Orlando are about 7-10 years older than their posted ages, you can bet on that.

Re: Mets Close to Signing Livan Hernandez

The Mets reportedly won't sign any starter until Johan Santana is moved somewhere.
