D-Train to Arrive in Flushing?

Quote:
With Victor Zambrano out for the season, the Mets will need another frontline starting pitcher. The most sensible maneuver is a deal for Florida's Dontrelle Willis, even if it costs Lastings Milledge. "No chance," one person in the Mets' loop said yesterday. -- Newsday

Sources say the Dodgers will explore trading Odalis Perez to the Mets. The Dodgers tried to trade him during the off-season, but no one was willing to take on his salary. -- Los Angeles Times

The Mets are expected to promote Jeremi Gonzalez from Triple-A Norfolk to take a start in Milwaukee this weekend, but that figures to be only a temporary plug for Victor Zambrano's rotation spot. -- New York Daily News

According to a published report, the Mets are planning to exercise a team option for 2007 in Tom Glavine's contract for $11 million. In the last two springs, the Mets restructured Glavine's four-year deal to free up payroll and add both a player option and a team option for next season. -- New York Post

Not a chance Florida trades Dontrelle Willis. They still have to sell tix.

I hope the Mets stay away from Odalis Perez, he's as stable a pitcher as Zambrano.

Re: D-Train to Arrive in Flushing?

Heard this morning the talks for Zito to NY have heated up, though. That one I could see getting done.

Cool Re: D-Train to Arrive in Flushing?

If what Jon Heyman of Newsday wrote is true (and his information is usually pretty reliable), the Mets won't make any deals because they don't want to trade their young players. No way the Mets get Zito or Willis unless they trade some serious minor league talent. They should try for a more middle of the road starter like O. Perez or a Woody Williams type.

Re: D-Train to Arrive in Flushing?

The Mets have to be gun shy after the Kazmir for Zambrano trade that precipitated this whole mess. Hey, it's not like they have to replace Sandy Koufax here. Zambrano was the fifth starter, how good do you have to be to do what he was doing? They need to not panic with a kneejerk reaction to this and patch something together. If this kid is as good as they say he is, hold onto him. It's not like Zito is in Cy Young form anyways.

Re: D-Train to Arrive in Flushing?

But would Zito be Cy Young potential in a different uniform (say a Mets jersey)?

More importantly, do you think Milledge will have a good career in the MLB (since all the other teams want him for a pitching star)?

Yes I do. He's one of the top minor league prospects in baseball. He has that rare combo of tools. He can hit for avg, has speed, good defense (CFer, can play both corner OF spots) and has picked up on the power. He's been amazing so far in AAA-Norfolk.

A line-up featuring Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Milledge for the next 6-8 years is nice.
