Mets Could Acquire Joe Blanton

Buster Olney said that the Mets "could acquire" Joe Blanton if they were willing to deal OF Carlos Gomez, RHP Aaron Heilman and RHP Kevin Mulvey.

I would do that deal in a heartbeat...if I was sure Johan Santana was not on the table for the Mets. Mulvey is one of the top Mets pitching prospects but this deal would allow the Mets to keep Fernando Martinez (who one scout said had a higher upside than Jacoby Ellsbury) and Mike Pelfrey. Plus, Blanton is a young pitcher who has pitched 200 innings in each of the past three years.

I'd do it.

Wow, the A's are still dealing away their pitching staff...maybe they can cut a deal with the Mets and become their farm team...

Billy Beane has obviously decided his team wasn't good enough to make the playoffs as it was so he's re-tooling it.

Mets HAVE to make this deal if they want to compete this year.

Re: Mets Could Acquire Joe Blanton

Certain Met fan sites are torn on this it seems. Some see Blanton as just another average starter. Others see potential in him to be a solid #2 and a great #3 guy.

I'm looking at it like this, even past this year, the Mets still need a good starter to add to the group. Next year, Pedro and El Duque are likely gone. That leaves Maine, Perez, Pelfrey and Humber. Who knows how Pelfrey and Humber may turn out.

Are the Reds out of this now. I heard they were concentrating on Blanton now.

Yeah, but you don't go down the road of dismantling your second young good staff this decade to get there.
