With Alex Rodriguez now a free-agent, talk will undoubtedly include the New York Mets in his off-season exploits. Just as it was done seven years back in 2000 when then-Mets GM Steve Phillips came close to bringing in A-Rod. Now, the Mets should NOT get involved. Stay out of the sweepstakes and here are some reasons why...
- Jose Reyes & David Wright! There is nobody that's worth moving the two cornerstones of the franchise. From a realistic standpoint, Wright would move to first. Then what happens to Delgado?
- Money! The Mets probably won't worry about money but why waste around $30 million per year on a single player. Use that money to go after some pitching, you know, the thing the Mets lacked at the end of the season.
- Playoff Curse? A-Rod has shown the ability to be the best player in the sport during the regular season. But once October rolls around, he wilts. Why would anyone think he would magically turn into Mantle or Jeter if he comes to Flushing?
- Did I mention the Mets need pitching, not a 3B/SS?
- PITCHING...unless A-Rod can throw a 98 mph heater and change speeds with a change or slider, STAY AWAY and go after PITCHING!
So in conclusion, the Mets should STAY AWAY from A-Rod this off-season and stick to improving the team in other ways. Pitching, pitching, pitching, and getting some hard nosed players to town for Shea's last year.
