That fateful day six years ago is etched in the minds of many. Ten days following, the first major sporting event in New York was held at Shea Stadium. The Atlanta Braves were in town to play the Mets in front of over 41,000 fans. The same Shea Stadium that was used as a relief center for the rescue effort.
Shaun Powell of Newsday pens a terrific piece remembering that symbolic game and emotional night in New York.
The Braves were leading going into the 8th inning...until Mike Piazza stepped up to bat. He nailed a two run homer that would turn out to be the game winning hit. When he made contact, Shea Stadium roared for the first time in weeks.
Powell mentions the only players present then who will be there tonight include Chipper Jones, Andruw Jones, John Smoltz and Tom Glavine (all Braves). No current day Mets player was present that night.
