The New York Mets offense has not been as strong as expected in the first half. In the past few hours, it's been reported by Newsday and the New York Times that the team has fired hitting coach Rick Downs (he now has the 'ability' to say he has been fired by both New York squads).

The Mets also announced the hiring of Rickey Henderson. Newsday says he'll be the new hitting coach. The Times says he may be the new hitting coach but the team is considering moving current first base coach Howard Johnson into the role (and Rickey as first base coach).

True, Rickey's a fun personality, but... coaching? I liked the guy but he always seemed to be a walking ego. How's this gonna work?

Well he has worked in a coaching role before with the Mets. In the off-season/spring training he worked with some of the guys (and specifically Jose Reyes) on working on taking more pitches and baserunning.

The guy is a Hall of Famer so I'm sure he'll be fine. The Mets needed a switch.
