Earlier today, the New York Mets held a press conference along with city and state officials to detail the plans for the new Mets Stadium. It will be built behind left field where Shea is in the parking lot. It's expected to be open by the 2009 season. Once it's built, Shea Stadium will be torn down (and not a moment too soon).
Mets owner Fred Wilpon is a Brooklyn boy so he has close ties to the Brooklyn Dodgers. He has fond memories of the Dodgers as a kid with his dad so he wanted the new field to be reminiscent of Ebbets Field.

There will only be about 45,000 seats (down from over 50,000 in Shea).
