Before today's game, the Mets called up OF Carlos Gomez and sent SP Mike Pelfrey back to Triple-A New Orleans.

Gomez is one of the top prospects in the Mets system, and 21 years old, a natural CF although he has some experience at LF and RF. He's starting in RF this afternoon.

Here's his stat line courtesy of MetsBlog: "Gomez, 21, was hitting .286 (40-140) with 24 runs scored, eight doubles, two triples, two home runs, 13 RBI, 17 stolen bases with 15 walks and 23 strikeouts in 36 games this year with New Orleans. Gomez is leading the PCL in stolen bases."

Nice first game for Gomez! According to the AP, "Gomez had an exciting major league debut for New York, getting two hits and scoring twice. Called up from the minors before the game when struggling pitcher Mike Pelfrey was sent to Triple-A New Orleans, the speedy Gomez also stole a base and made a diving catch in right field."

I saw that catch! It was amazing! and tack on his double as well! I must say the Mets may be an old team but I could see an outfield of Beltran, Milledge, Gomez and/or Chavez in the future being very young and very effective.

Over the past year in the minors, Gomez has grown as a hitter and has become more patient at the plate. He attributed it to the fact he was playing with more veterans in Triple-A.

As the Mets announcers mentioned, the power isn't there yet with Gomez. But he's 6+ feet tall and over 200 pounds so it will come eventually. He's only 21. Scouts compare his ability to patrol the outfield to Torrie Hunter.

For at least one day, IMO, the Mets had the best outfield defense in the majors with Endy Chavez, Carlos Beltran and Carlos Gomez.
