Before and after the Mets 4-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox earlier tonight, the Mets optioned a few players to minor league camp. According to John Delcos of the Journal News, RHP Phil Humber, LHP Jason Vargas, OF Carlos Gomez and OF Ruben Sierra were all sent down to the minors.

Sierra will think over his options and either accept the move and stay in the minors or retire. At least, that's what I think his options are.

As for the two pitchers being sent down. This likely increases the chances of RHP Mike Pelfrey to start the season in the big leagues.

I bet Sierra retires... of course, thanks to Rickey Henderson, a guy that age playing minor league ball isn't unprecedented. Some guys just really seem to love the game and they can't get enough of it. If that winds up being Sierra's mindset, more power to him.

Julio Franco will be playing till he is put in a pine box so there are some guys like that.
