Actually, what happened was Clyde King, part of Steinbrenner's Tampa contingent, told Steinbrenner in 1996 that Jeter wasn't ready to be the every day shortstop. So they were all set to to trade Mariano Rivera for Felix Fermin.
But before they did, Steinbrenner called a big meeting with his Tampa contingent and the New York contingent. At the time, Bob Watson was the new GM and Gene Michael had just quit but Michael was in the meeting.
Michael basically ripped King and/or the Tampa contingent a new butt hole and told Steinbrenner to stick with Jeter. Steinbrenner listened to Michael and nixed the deal.
