Cool Reyes for Alomar?

Wow. What do they say? Sometime the best trades are the ones that are never made. Can you imagine?

AMAZIN'S OFFERED JOSE TO TRIBE FOR ALOMAR
By JOEL SHERMAN
If you think the Roberto Alomar trade was a disaster for the Mets, you should know it could have been worse. Far, far worse.

An official who was involved in the discussions that led to that Dec. 11, 2001 deal said that one of the players the Mets made available to Cleveland was a Low-A shortstop named Jose Reyes. The official said the Indians liked Reyes, but simply did not have enough information from their South Atlantic League scouts to make an 18-year-old with just two pro seasons the key player in the deal rather than Alex Escobar.

Re: Reyes for Alomar?

My goodness that would have been horrific. And Reyes may not have even made it to the bigs with the O's if they had Tejada around. But thank GOODNESS he wasn't dealt.

Reyes is so fun to watch, it's a real joy.

Well, let us all rejoice in the lack of proper scouting by Baltimore...I guess we all have something to be thankful for...too funny.

Re: Reyes for Alomar?

There was a story last season from a reporter who said back in 95 I guess it was, the Yankees talked about trading Mariano Rivera to the Seattle Mariners for some veteran SS because they thought Jeter wouldn't be a good pro.

Now THAT'S funny.

Funny?...no, that means that anyone one of us, with a little Matt Millen luck, can be a GM in sports...

Actually, what happened was Clyde King, part of Steinbrenner's Tampa contingent, told Steinbrenner in 1996 that Jeter wasn't ready to be the every day shortstop. So they were all set to to trade Mariano Rivera for Felix Fermin.

But before they did, Steinbrenner called a big meeting with his Tampa contingent and the New York contingent. At the time, Bob Watson was the new GM and Gene Michael had just quit but Michael was in the meeting.

Michael basically ripped King and/or the Tampa contingent a new butt hole and told Steinbrenner to stick with Jeter. Steinbrenner listened to Michael and nixed the deal.

Re: Reyes for Alomar?

Looking back on that deal though (the real one, not the Reyes one of course), I was ecstatic when I learned they dealt for Alomar. They really didn't give up any real prospects except for Escobar and even by then, he was a bit of a dissapointment. I don't know what Alomar's deal with NY was though, he just was never the same. A shame.

It's not like he broke out of his career swandive when he left the Mets either. Him and Mo Vaughn took the has been express out of New York. I hope Moises Alou isn't going to on that track.
