Bret Boone Retires

The kid from Seattle who hit a lot of homeruns who fell quickly...that's likely what he'll be remembered as. The steroid cloud will hang over his head, albeit nobody has proof other than his drastic fall from production in recent years.

In any event, his retirement pretty much guarantees that Kaz Matsui will start on opening day at second. The team has been trying Chris Woodward at second in camp to open up their options.

I really hope Anderson Hernandez gets to have a serious shot at 2nd come spring training. His youthful exuberance added with Reyes will add for highlights up the middle for years.

Re: Bret Boone Retires

Alas, poor Bret...i saw him, Horatio.

In fact, i was at the Kingdom in Seattle in 1992 to see him play in his first home game ever.

Important bit of trivia: Bret Boone is the first third-generation major leaguer, following father Bob and grandfather Raymond Otis "Ike" Boone. All three were all-stars. Two other families have subsequently joined the trigenerational group: the Bells and the Hairstons.

Lots of neat information about baseball genetics can be found at baseball-almanac.com, and specifically here.

Re: Bret Boone Retires

Os, when you talked about family generations I immediately thought of the Ripken family...but that's only two. Interesting trivia note.
