Mets Officially Sign Moises Alou

Breaking news from MetsBlog. No numbers yet although Omar Minaya will be appearing on a Mets Off-Season TV Show later this evening.

Finally, next to Manny Ramirez, I think the Mets have targeted Alou for as long as anyone.

edit.......Moises Alou signed a 1-year, $7.5 Million contract.

Pretty good when you consider others like Soriano and Lee will get about $14-$18 Mil per year.

Re: Mets Officially Sign Moises Alou

If Alou can do what he did in 100 games this year i will be happy for a whole season next year.

Side note: Rumor is that the mets wont pursue Zito unless Glavine opts to go to the braves.

Glavine back to the Braves?

Re: Mets Officially Sign Moises Alou

The Mets shot themselves in foot twice with this news. Not only are they bringing on an aging, injury-prone left fielder to replace another aging, injury-prone player ( instead of bringing in Millege), but they decline the option of one the best pitchers in the National League. With available starters being so scarce, this was a really stupid move. The Mets now need to sign Zito and another top of the line pitcher, if they expect to win their division. The Mets have had a terrible offseason so far...

hold on there, the declining of Glavine's option was a formality. It was known all year they would do that. The option was for $14 Million. Now Glavine is a free-agent and will take a week to think things through. He will talk with Atlanta and some sources say the hold up will be the no-trade clause. The Mets will gladly offer him a two-year deal with plenty of money and a full no-trade clause. The likelihood he stays with the Mets is great.

Alou is a good signing. It's a one year deal for a very good right handed bat, one they very muchso needed. He was only injured last year because of a freak accident playing defense in Philly.

As far as a terrible off-season, I'd beg to differ. They re-signed Valentin and El Duque. They traded aging players for younger ones (from the Padres trade and most recently, the Marlins trade). So far so good.

Re: Mets Officially Sign Moises Alou

I think Glavine will end up with the Braves next year, he's obviously interested in returning to Atlanta. Why didn't the Mets pick up Glavine's $14 million option? I don't see how they're gonna sign him for much less then that ( Mussina just signed for almost $12 million a year). I think the Braves are going to be able to offer Glavine more, and bring him back to their rotation.

Hasn't Alou been injured been injured a whole lot over the past two years? His playing time is decreasing, and his hitting is taking a noticeable decline. Don't you think the Mets would have been better off signing a rookie (or bringing up Millege) to play left field? With a rookie, the Mets would've gotten speed, health, good defense, and better hitting.

El Duque's been nothing special lately, but I am glad the New York resigned Valentin. They still have a lot of work left, and they haven't even begun to address it. The Mets need starters (besides the ones they had last year), some backup infielders, and some relievers to cushion Wagner (and replace Mota).

Alou hasn't been that injured over the past few years. Last year he had just under 400 ABs and the previous few years he had around 500 ABs. His offensive power has only declined. His BA and OBP are still very high when compared to other possibilities out there. Omar Minaya said he didn't want to put a lot of pressure on Milledge in 07 saying if they just handed him the job, there would have been tons of pressure to produce. And he's had less time in the minors than David Wright did, so he still has some time to come along. Alou is a good signing, he wants to win and he chose the one-year deal to play in NY when he could've taken two or three year deals to play elsewhere.

With Glavine, he won't get more money from Atlanta and everyone doubts he'll get a multiple year offer and a no trade clause. There's no guarantee they'll be good (he wants 300 wins). New York can offer a chance to win and a guaranteed shot at 300. Plus, he'll almost certainly be offered a two year deal at least with plenty of money. It's all up to him.

Obviously there's a lot more work to do. They're after Zito and Minaya has said they're looking at acquiring a starter via trade.
