Mets Re-Sign El Duque

Another player has re-signed with the Mets, RHP and only Livan Herndandez knows how old he is , El Duque Orlando Hernandez. The deal is two-years worth about $6 million according to Sports Illustrated.

I like the move because El Duque has the guts to pitch in New York and is a reliable starter. He won't (well, probably not) give them 32 starts but as long as he's healthy for October 2007, that's all that matters.

Good move.

So the rotation looks like this as of now for opening day.

1. ????
2. Tom Glavine (I really don't see him going to Atlanta, he may become a free-agent jsut to get a two-year deal from the Mets).
3. El Duque
4. John Maine
5. Oliver Perez

Still, I wouldn't be surprised if they go and get two more starters and have some competition for the rotation.

Truthfully, that lineup doesn't look like it would scare anybody. They will be relying on their offense again next year unless they get another arm.

What about Victor Zambrano and Aaron Heilman?

And of course, Steve "The Injured" Trachsel.

Yeah, John Maine and Oliver Perez won't scare anyone... that's still a pretty bad rotation. The Mets should shoot for something like this:

1. Barry Zito ( or Jason Schmidt)
2. Tom Glavine
3. Ted Lily ( or Mark Redman)
4. El Duque
5. John Maine

Maine and Perez have earned their spots (well Maine for sure) with their great post-season. I know Maine is thought of very highly by the Mets.

Schmidt won't come to New York. He'll stay on the west coast. I'd stay away from Lilly because he's always hurt.

Zambrano I believe is a free-agent after his season ending injury last year and I haven't heard much about him in the past few months.

Heilman, if not traded, will be kept in the bullpen.

Trachsel is a free-agent and won't be brought back.

Re: Mets Re-Sign El Duque

If they get Zito AND Glavine then that pitching rotation is solid. Granted that's a HUGE if. El Duque is a great playoff pitcher and i'm sure that went into their resigning him as anyone can see they are building a team made for the post season.
